The goods and services tax (GST) is a tax that you pay on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. In Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island, the GST has been blended with the provincial sales tax and is called the harmonized sales tax (HST). Note that this free invoice sample designed by InvoicingTemplate.com is set up for a business in Ontario where the HST rate is 13% (as of April 1, 2013). You should change the HST rate according to the rate applicable in your province. For example, in B.C., the HST rate is 5% (as of April 1, 2013), in Nova Scotia, the HST rate is 15%, and in New Brunswick and Newfoundland/Labrador the HST rate is 13%. If you have Uniform Invoice Software installed, changing the tax rate is as easy and simple - firstly, you click the Settings button on the Excel ribbon tab, and then go to the Taxes tab, fill in the tax rate percentage number into the first tax rate box, and then click "Apply". Click the Close button to close the Settings dialog box. Note that in order to make the change permanently, you'll need to click Excel menu File / Save to save the invoice template file - you have to do only once. This is because the default tax rate is saved into a hidden cell on the invoicing form.
Like the default sales invoice template shipped with Uniform Invoice Software setup program, the price on this template excludes tax. Unlike the default invoice template, this template details the tax amount for each invoicing item. This is done by using Excel formulas.
As you can see from Canadian Invoice Template with HST, one benefit of using Excel as your invoice creator, as compared to other template formats like Microsoft Word invoice template and PDF invoice template, HTML format or even Photoshop format, is that you can easily apply formulas to do calculations. This means that, once the basic figures are entered on the form, like Quantity and Unit Price, or Hours and Hourly Rate, or Days and Daily Rate, the calculation of totals and taxes is done automatically.
The Item# (product#) column, which is seen on the default invoice template, is also moved out of the print area of the invoicing form.
The printable area, or print area, is the area with white background on the center of the Canadian Invoice Template with HST spreadsheet. By default Microsoft Excel prints the entire worksheet when you issue the print command, but if the worksheet has a print area defined, such as what we do for Canadian Invoice Template with HST, only the print area will print. You can add cells to expand the print area as needed, and you can clear the print area to print the entire worksheet again. If you need to recreate the print area definition, here are what to do: On the "Invoice" worksheet of the Canadian Invoice Template with HST, select the cells that you want to define as the print area; On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Print Area, and then click Set Print Area.
Moving a cell or a group of cells is easy in Excel. First, you click to select the cell or drag your mouse to select all the cells you want to move. And then, drag the border of the selected area to move it to the new location where you want to place the cell or cells. The moving content will overwrite the content in the target location, so make sure the target range is empty (not used) in Canadian Invoice Template with HST before doing the movement. And, if the target location contains merged cells, sometimes the movement fails. So it is also helpful to make sure the target location does not contain merged cell.
